Partner in FLOW: City of Gdynia 

Gdynia is a port city situated in the northern part of Poland on the Baltic Sea. The city belongs to the Metropolitan Area Gdansk-Gdynia-Sopot with more than 1.5 million inhabitants. It is a Polish centre of maritime economy, international trade, science and education, culture and tourism. It is one of the most rapidly developing Polish cities where small and medium-sized enterprises play the leading role.

Public transport in Gdynia perceived as one of the most energy efficient and accessible in Poland. Vehicle fleet consists of innovative low-emission buses, Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses and a modern fleet of trolleybuses. Unfortunately, with more than 500 cars per 1,000 residents and an increase in the modal share of cars by more than 6% since 2008, Gdynia is facing a problem of raising congestion. Gdynia is also facing parking problems in the city centre, a lack of park and rides, and a lack of pedestrian zones.

Gdynia's sustainable mobility goals

In order to increase the cycling modal share, a bicycle audit was conducted in 2013, indicating actions to be undertaken to achieve a 10% share by 2023. Measures to create more pedestrian-friendly areas include introducing car restrictions and 30 km/h zones. As a result of Gdynia's activities in the CIVITAS DYN@MO project, a wider discussion has started on introducing the first pedestrian area in Gdynia's city centre. In Gdynia there is a high modal share of public transport. The city is trying to make public transport more competitive by introducing innovative and energy efficient vehicles, bus lanes and establishing priority for public transport at traffic lights.

Macro and microscopic modelling in FLOW

Gdynia has a three-level transport model which was developed within the CIVITAS DYN@MO project by Gdansk University of Technology. The tool allows for modelling individual and collective motorised traffic. Through its participation in the FLOW project, Gdynia aimed to extend its transport model to include pedestrian and cycling traffic so that it may be used as a tool for planning, decision-making and analysing walking and cycling measures' impact on congestion.

Anticipated outcomes

Gdynia established a baseline for walking, on the basis of analyses of different measures aimed at increasing walking and reducing congestion. They included also the city's planned cycle network in analyses of road traffic modifications to assess their impact on congestion.
